There are tons of cleaning articles and tips available everywhere. But, do they work? The truth is, you will never know until you try!! And that’s exactly what I did – I took action instead of just reading and wondering!
Years ago, I came across the pillowcase trick for cleaning ceiling fans. I was so intrigued that I decided to give it a try and ever since, I have been using this technique to clean my ceiling fans! Even my husband (who’s ever the skeptic) was impressed. It is by far one of our favorite cleaning tips/hacks and I keep recommending everyone! 🙂

Now, as promised, here are my Best House Cleaning Tips and Hacks to help make your house super clean. Trust me, they work!
- If the area beneath your kitchen sink is prone to smells, this house cleaning tip is for you. Place an open box of baking soda beneath. The baking soda will absorb and neutralize bad odour.
- Try this amazingly simple cleaning hack to remove hard water stains from metal hardware (such as faucets, etc.). Just clean them with lemon juice or some white vinegar!
- Clean your Ceiling fan blades easily with an old pillowcase. Simply slip an old pillowcase over the blade. Then, wipe the blade as you pull the pull the pillowcase off and all the dust will stay in the pillow case. This way you won’t end up dropping all that grime all over the place. This house cleaning tip has made it so easy to clean the ceiling fans, even my husband was impressed!
- Deodorize your mattress by sprinkling some baking soda over it. Let it sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming up.
- Have a place for everything that your kids own. That way they will know exactly what goes where when you tell them to put things away. This cleaning hack is so simple, but it makes life so much easier!
- Give your cleaners a few minutes to work. Allow them to sit on the surface for a few minutes before wiping them away. This helps soften and dissolve dirt and stains, so less scrubbing is required. This especially makes a difference while cleaning greasy and grimy surfaces
- If you live in an apartment, use a dust pan to collect dust and debris while cleaning the balcony. If you brush the debris off the balcony, it is likely to blow onto your neighbor’s balcony below.
- Line fridge shelves with plastic wrap after cleaning to catch spills and drips. You won’t have to scrub the shelves to clean.
- To unclog the showerhead, tie a bag of vinegar around it immersing the showerhead in the vinegar. Leave it to dissolve overnight and rinse the showerhead in the morning.
- Baking Soda Powder can freshen carpets and get rid of odor.
- Vents can collect large amounts of dust. Used a vacuum cleaner hose to remove dust and cobwebs from vents.
- Never rub a spill. This just spreads the stain further. Before scrubbing, blot up as much of the stain as you can with a cloth or paper towel and then treat.
- Store your toilet brush in a container of bleach; replace the bleach once a week.
- To minimize streaking, experts suggest using a squeegee and the “S” method to clean. Make “S” motions as you pull the squeegee down the glass
- Run the bathroom exhaust fan or crack open a window while you shower—and for at least 10 minutes afterward—to prevent mold buildup.
- Use a Vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and crumbs from under couch cushions.
- Use a bendable duster with a long handle to reach ceiling fan blades and above the window sill.
- Cleaning is much easier when everything has a home. Work on creating organized storage for all of the things that end up being scattered around the house, like papers, mail, shoes & toys.
- Rather than dusting with a dry cloth and having the dust become airborne again, dust with a damp cloth. This keeps the dust on the cloth and not in the air which means surfaces stay clean longer. Use a microfiber cloth that can be tossed into the washing machine every time you dust.
- To unclog a drain, pour half a cup of baking soda in the drain. Following this, pour half a cup of vinegar into the drain. Allow the mixture to react for 15-20 minutes. Then pour very hot/boiling water into the drain. (Repeat if necessary)
- Eradicate hard-water stains in the toilet by pouring in a cup of distilled white vinegar once a month. Let sit overnight; then flush.
- Do not use furniture polish every time you dust. This can cause build up on your furniture. Dust with a soft cloth and use polish sparingly.
- Never use bleach on carpet or upholstery
- Use a large laundry basket to collect items such as toys or clothing that need to be returned to a different room. If you have multiple offenders, use multiple baskets. After you have finished tidying every room, take 5 minutes to put away the collected items.
- If you feel stressed whenever your home gets dirty or messy, cleaning as you go can end up saving you a lot of time in the long run.
- Scratched wood can be fixed. Mix ½ cup vinegar with ½ cup olive oil. Take a kitchen rag, dip it into the mixture and rub it over the scratched surface in a circular motion. You should see the marks miraculously disappear.
- To keep bacteria from taking up permanent residence in your kitchen sponges, rinse them with water at the end of each day, squeeze out the excess and then stick them in the microwave for three minutes. Just be sure to let them cool before you touch.
- Squeegee down tiled walls and glass doors after a shower to prevent soap scum from building up

I love how you emphasize the importance of action over just reading about tips—so true!
Great tips! Love the eco-friendly cleaner suggestions. Super practical and easy to follow—thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the checklist, it has been more than useful! The deep kitchen cleaning is something I fear every year, because the different appliances accumulate so much dirt and grease, that it’s impossible to clean them properly. I use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to clean the inside parts of every appliance, it works miracles because when the two ingredients mix, they start fizzing, and the baking soda itself is a good abrasive. Sometimes I also use lemon juice, it whitens surfaces, takes care of stains, and smells nicer than vinegar.

Oh yes! It is indeed a challenge to keep the house clean when you have pets 🙂 . You could try baking soda for the odor, though.
