Spring Cleaning Checklist
Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist

The reason why many moms put off spring cleaning is because they are either not sure where to start or because  they are overwhelmed by all that needs to be done.

But the truth is, spring cleaning is simple when you have a proper and realistic plan in place. The hardest part is getting started.

This is where my 30 Day Cleaning Checklist comes in handy. This spring cleaning checklist outlines a series of systematically planned tasks to help you clean and organize every corner of your house.

Why 30 days?! Shouldn’t spring cleaning get done within a couple of days at the most?

It is my observation that the biggest mistake that many moms make, when it comes to spring cleaning, is trying to get it all done within a few days. This just leads to burnout and frustration and you start to associate Spring Cleaning with negative feelings.

When you undertake a challenge as huge as spring cleaning your entire house, it is easy and quite likely that you will get bored or overwhelmed and give up. That is why it is important to break it up into chunks and do a little bit everyday.

Of course, you can always increase or decrease the number of days you take to complete this Spring Cleaning Checklist, depending on your personal circumstances.

Spring Cleaning is much easier when you have a regular cleaning schedule in place. When you do a little bit regularly, cleaning becomes a habit and chores get done much faster. I teach all these strategies in my ebook (and my course)30 Days to a Clean House

Why do you need a Spring Cleaning Checklist?

Spring Cleaning your entire house is a huge project that involves several important tasks. Having a Checklist helps you stay on track and ensures that you do not miss anything.

Besides, checking things off your list provides a feeling of accomplishment and will help you stay motivated.

A Spring Cleaning Checklist helps you monitor your progress. At a glance, you can tell how far you have gotten and how much is left to be done.

Is spring cleaning necessary?

Spring Cleaning your house has some obvious benefits

  • It allows you to get rid of dust, mould, and mildew before they become a problem
  • It can help get rid of allergens that your usual cleaning regimen may miss!
  • It is an excellent opportunity to get rid of unwanted items from your closets, drawers, and cabinets!
  • Spring Cleaning can make you healthier

How to start spring cleaning the house?

Begin by completing activities that relate to all rooms, such as

  • Deep cleaning the ceilings and walls: Dust and vacuum or wash the ceilings and walls. Pay attention to corners and edges. Don’t forget the air vents, doors, switch plates etc.
  • Deep clean any wall decor: Dust and wipe all artwork, frames and photographs that line your walls. If necessary, use a damp cloth to clean the glass surfaces of framed artwork.
  • Deep clean all furniture and fixtures: Wipe down and polish furniture if necessary,  clean the ceiling fans, light fixtures, exhausts etc. Make a note of anything that needs to be replaced or fixed.
  • Deep clean the windows and doors: Take down any curtains and set them aside to be washed on laundry day. Clean the windows – the glass panes, grills, frames, the window sill etc. Clean the kitchen door(s) and the frame, paying attention to corners and edges. Don’t forget to clean the doorknobs and/or handles as well.
  • Deep clean the floor: Clean out rugs, carpets etc. Thoroughly sweep or vacuum and mop the floor, shifting/moving appliances and furniture to make sure you get to the hard to reach areas. Clean the baseboards.

After that go through each room one at a time for more thorough cleaning.

Make cleaning checklists for each room to help you stay organized and remind you of areas that need special attention. You can always skip areas that you regularly clean and concentrate on the areas that have been neglected.

When should I start Spring Cleaning?

Ideally, you should begin spring cleaning when you have sometime in your schedule to devote to cleaning. This may be the weekend for a lot of people.

Alternatively, you could set aside an hour or so daily, towards giving your home the love and attention it needs. I personally prefer the second approach because I like to have my weekends relatively free.

Spring clean fast

I get it. Not everyone can manage to set aside time daily, to clean. Some moms’ schedules are just so jam packed during weekdays that they barely get their basic chores done.
Here are some tips to help you Spring Clean fast, over the weekend or  when you have a couple of days free.

  • Make a Spring Cleaning Plan – Always have a plan before you begin. This will help you stay on track and get things done faster and more efficiently. It also ensures that you don’t miss out on things. Make a list of everything that needs to be done and put them in the order in which you will get them done, from first to last
  • Get the family involved – I believe that cleaning the house is a joint responsibility and the entire family should help in whatever way possible. And when it comes to spring cleaning, the more help you have, the faster it gets done. Getting children involved in the house cleaning also teaches them important life skills.
  • Make it fun – I know; cleaning is boring and nobody likes to do it. But there are ways to make it a little bit fun and doable. Play some music, turn it into a game, create fun tasks for kids, Take small breaks, use a timer and race to finish chores, offer rewards  etc.
  • Try my Timed Lockdown Technique – This technique involves locking yourself in an area that you will be cleaning, in order to eliminate distractions. Gather all your cleaning supplies and lock yourself in. Set a timer for an hour or so and get to work.  Do not leave the room to put things away. Put them in their rightful places once you are finished cleaning.
  • Clean Systematically – When you clean a room, start from the top of the room and work your way down. This prevents dust from falling on surfaces that you have already cleaned. Work from one side of the room to the other side, in a systematic manner, so that you don’t miss any spots.
